# OpenAI Releases First Open-Weight Language Models Under Apache 2.0 License

OpenAI announced a significant shift in strategy with the release of gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, marking the company's first open-weight language models available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license.

The two models—available in 120 billion and 20 billion parameter versions—represent a departure from OpenAI's traditionally closed approach to AI development. Unlike proprietary models that require API access, these open-weight models can be downloaded, modified, and deployed freely by developers and researchers.

According to OpenAI, both models deliver "state-of-the-art" performance on reasoning tasks while outperforming similarly sized open-source alternatives. The models also feature strong tool-use capabilities and are specifically optimized to run efficiently on consumer-grade hardware, lowering the barrier
