# OpenAI Upgrades Operator Tool to o3 Model While API Stays on GPT-4o

OpenAI announced today that it is upgrading the underlying model powering its Operator tool from GPT-4o to the newer o3 model. However, the API version of Operator will continue running on GPT-4o for now.

The announcement, posted on OpenAI's official Twitter account, came as an addendum to the company's system card documentation for o3 and o4-mini models.

Operator, OpenAI's autonomous agent tool that can perform tasks on behalf of users, will now leverage the more advanced o3 reasoning model instead of GPT-4o. This upgrade applies specifically to the consumer-facing version of Operator.

**What's Staying the Same**

Developers using Operator through OpenAI's API won't see
