# OpenAI Unveils o1: A New Reasoning-Focused AI Model

OpenAI has announced the launch of o1, a new artificial intelligence model that represents a significant shift in how AI systems approach complex problems.

Unlike previous models that generate responses quickly, o1 is designed to "think" before answering. The model spends more time processing queries, working through multiple steps internally before providing a response. This approach makes it particularly effective at tackling complex tasks in science, mathematics, and coding.

According to OpenAI's announcement, o1 performs at a level comparable to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology. In coding competitions, it reached the 89th percentile, and it placed among the top 500 students in the USA Math Olympiad qualifier.
