# OpenAI Trains AI to Play Minecraft Using Human Video Data

OpenAI has announced a breakthrough in teaching artificial intelligence to play Minecraft through a technique called Video PreTraining (VPT). The system learns by watching massive amounts of unlabeled videos of humans playing the game, requiring only minimal labeled training data from contractors.

The achievement is significant: the AI can craft diamond tools in Minecraft, a complex task that typically takes skilled human players over 20 minutes and involves executing 24,000 separate actions. This demonstrates the model's ability to plan and execute long sequences of strategic decisions.

What makes this approach particularly notable is its generality. The AI interacts with Minecraft using the same controls humans do—keyboard presses and mouse movements—rather than having direct access to the game's code. This "human interface" approach suggests the technology could potentially be adapted to control other computer applications.

OpenAI positions this development as a
