# OpenAI Develops Neural Network System to Understand Word Meanings in Context

OpenAI has announced a new system that automatically determines which specific object or entity a word refers to when it appears in text—a challenge known as entity disambiguation.

The system works by using a neural network to classify words against approximately 100 automatically-discovered "types" or categories. These categories are non-exclusive, meaning a single word can belong to multiple types simultaneously, helping the AI understand context and meaning more accurately.

Entity disambiguation is a fundamental problem in natural language processing. For example, the word "Apple" could refer to the fruit or the technology company, while "Paris" might mean the French capital or Paris Hilton. Current AI systems often struggle to determine the correct meaning without sufficient context.

What makes OpenAI's approach notable is that the system discovers these categories automatically rather than relying on pre-defined classifications. This allows the neural network to learn patterns and
